Brent MayOn the Hot Seat
with Brent May

I first met Bob a few years ago while working at one of my many put-me-through-college jobs, when he would come and hang out with my friends and I. I always noticed that he would drive this funny looking bug killer that smoked more than my uncle Roy, so I asked him about it one day. From that conversation on, I was completely sold and just had to have one of these little things for myself. Little did I know, that day would be the start of a great friendship, and also the beginning of a great hobby as well.

{grin}1. What is your full name?
Robert Curtis Smith.

2. Where were you born?
Bedford, Indiana.

3. How old are you?
35.

4. Any brothers or sisters?
2 half brothers, 2 half sisters.

5. Where do you currently live?
Bedford, Indiana.

6. Where do you work?
M&E Honda Sales.

7. What do you do there?
I am a motorcycle service technician.

8. Do you have a nick name that you go by?
Bob, or Smitty.

9. How long have you been into the sport of off-roading?
Around 15 years.

10. Who or what first got you interested in the sport?
My cousins all had full size 4x4s when we were younger. I started with a full size Ford....in a farm pond!

11. Are you involved in any off-road club s, and if so what is the name of your club?
I am one of the Bedford Boys!!

12. What is the year, make, and model of your current off-road 4x4?
1988 Suzuki Samurai, Godzuki.

13. How long have you had it?
About 6-7 years.

14. Why did you choose this particular 4x4?
I originally wanted it because the top came off. I had it about 3 days before I found out what it was really good for. I went muddin with the big trucks and I could go everywhere they could!

15. Is this your first off-road 4x4?
No, I have had 6 besides this one.

16. What s the scariest moment you've ever had off-roading?
It was at The Badlands, I topped a hill without knowing what was on the other side only to find a 30ft straight down drop on the other side. The hill tapered at the bottom, so the landing was smooth. The trip down was terrifying!

Click Through...17. What was the funniest?
Getting pulled off the front bumper of a Samurai that was hopelessly stuck in a mud hole. I was laying on the bumper getting the winch cable, when my now, ex wife, pulled me off into the water as revenge for letting her fall into the water earlier.

18. What have you learned from the sport that you can apply to your everyday life?
Determination. You can do ANYTHING if you really put your mind to it!

19. If you could sit down and talk to anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
My father. I spent so much time fighting with him when he was alive, that I never got to really spend any quality time with him.

20. What was the name of the last book you read?
The Idiot s Guide to Dating, by Dr. Judy Kuriansky.

21. What was the last movie that you watched?
Gone in Sixty Seconds. For the 20th time.

22. What is your favorite style of music?
I pretty much listen to anything. I mostly listen to rock, and alternative, but George Straight is playing right now.

23. What do you like to listen to on the trails?
Usually something heavy. Godsmack, Puddle of Mudd, something like that.

24. When your not off-roading, or working, how do you like to spend your time?
I like to ride motorcycles every time I get the chance. I spend a lot of time helping my friends with their vehicles, and computer repairs.

25. If I gave you a plane ticket to visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Sydney, Australia. I heard the water spins the opposite direction when you flush the toilet in the southern hemisphere. I wanna go see that for myself! Seriously, I would love to go to Australia, I have always been fascinated by their people and culture.

26. Name someplace that you have visited that you would love to visit again.
Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I went there for my honeymoon, I would love to go back and do it all again, maybe with someone special this time.

27. If you could give one piece of advice to any future off-road enthusiasts, what would it be?
Be patient, don t lose your temper, listen to, and watch the old hands, most of them know what they are doing. Don't get too serious, it s all about having fun, and absolutely nothing else!

Bob, thank you for your time, and you are now... off the hot seat!
